Goldendoodle Puppies: Best Places To Look for One

Updated 03/13/2024 – The Goldendoodle is still one of the most popular breeds that people are looking for. With so many people looking to find a Goldendoodle puppy and so many breeders now breeding them, it’s hard to know where to look. Especially if you are looking for a breeder that is not a puppy mill.

That was the case for us. When we were looking for a mini Goldendoodle puppy, none of the breeders near me had available puppies.

We were told that we would have to wait a year to get a puppy, and that we would have to pay a deposit of a few hundred dollars to be placed on the waiting list.

Unfortunately, many people turn to on-line puppy for sale sites to get their Goldendoodle puppy quickly. But most of these sites are just puppy mills in disguise. They want you to think that they are a small breeder that cares for their dogs, but there are hints that you can look for to see if they are a puppy mill.

Please keep reading to learn where you can find a reputable goldendoodle breeder to get a healthy goldendoodle puppy, hints on how to avoid buying from a puppy mill and even some ways to find a free or discounted Goldendoodle puppy.

Best Places To Find a Goldendoodle Puppy

1. Goldendoodle Breeders

Before we get into where to find a breeder for a Goldendoodle puppy, we need to agree on what a good breeder looks like.

A good breeder cares about the health of their dogs and the puppies they sell. They do this by making sure breeding pairs are without genetic health issues before mating. This means preforming genetic health tests on their breeding dogs. It also means raising the parents in a humane, loving way.

Why is this important?

A dog that has been cared for will care for their puppies. Neglected dogs cannot provide adequate nourishment for the puppies to grow strong and healthy.

Dogs that carrier genetic health disorders will pass them down to their off-spring. These conditions typically don’t reveal themselves until long after most health guarantees have expired.

Puppies also learn from their mothers and their environment during the first seven to eight weeks of the life. Puppies who are born in harsh conditions will not trust people. This only makes them harder to train.

So where do you find a good breeder?

One of the best places to find a Goldendoodle puppy is at a local Goldendoodle breeder. I say “local” because you want to be able to pick up your puppy from the breeder when the time comes to take them home.

Tip #1: Breeders that don’t allow you to pick up at their home are generally trying to hide something from you.

“Local” does have to mean in your state. But pick a breeder that you can drive to comfortably.

Where do you find a local good breeder?

You can find local Goldendoodle breeders that preform health testing and abide by a code of ethics for proper breeding through the Goldendoodle Association of North America (GANA).

Only breeders who perform required health testing as outlined on the GANA website are eligible for membership. GANA took it a step further by developing an award system to distinguish the level of health testing done by the breeder.

A Red Ribbon award shows that the breeder performs the basic health tests required under GANA guidelines. A Blue Ribbon is awarded to breeders who go the extra mile to perform additional recommended tests as outlined in GANA guidelines.

These tests can be costly which in turn, increases the cost of a Goldendoodle. But it is worth it to have a healthy dog.

Tip # 2: Once you have decided on a few breeders, ask the breeders for all the health test results for the parents of the litters you are interested in. If they can’t supply it they probably do not test the dogs.

Below is a list of Goldendoodle breeders that have won a red ribbon award from GANA.

2. Guardian Home Program

As I mentioned above, the cost of a well-bred, health tested Goldendoodle can be high. But if you are willing to put in extra time and work, you can get a Goldendoodle puppy for large discount or even for free.

This is by agreeing to be part of a Guardian Home Program. A Guardian Home Program is an agreement between the breeder and owner of a guardian dog that allows the breeder, breeding rights to the dog for a set amount of time.

While both male and female dogs can be part of a Guardian Home Program, they are most often female.

General Guardian Home Programs Overview:

Although the actual terms of a Guardian Home Program will vary by breeder, the basic idea of the program is the same.

  • You must live within a predetermined distance from the breeder. Usually it’s within an hour’s drive
  • Dogs are selected by the breeder
    • You will get the best pick of the litter as defined by the breeder.
  • You are generally responsible for routine care and veterinary services for the dog as determined by the breeder
  • They may dictate the type of food the dog will eat while in the breeding program.
  • The breeder will be responsible for breeding associated costs.
  • Dogs will spend time away from you.
    • Female dogs will spend time at the breeders when they are in heat, towards the end of the pregnancy and during whelping
    • Male dogs will have shorter time periods that they are away, it may happen more often.
    • You will need to drive the dogs to the breeders when needed.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring that your dog does not conceive with a dog that is not approved by the breeder.
  • Dogs will be bred for a specified number of times or years before they are released from the program
  • Once the contract has been fulfilled the dog will be fixed.

There may be other requirements too, like how long the dog’s hair is or how the dog is groomed

3. Rescue Groups

Specialized rescue groups are another way to find a Goldendoodle. You may even be able to find a puppy. Rescue groups acquire their dogs in a number of ways;

  • Pulled from local shelters
  • Re-homing services offered by the rescue
  • Commercial breeders that either shut down or where unable to sell the puppies.

In our post “Goldendoodle Rescue : 13 Best Places To Look” we list the rescue groups with the best chance of having a Goldendoodle. The most common types of doodles you will find at a rescue is F1 Doodles since these are the ones that shed the most.

4. Local Shelters

While finding a Goldendoodle puppy at a local shelter may be rare, it does still happen. We found our purebred Golden Retriever that way.

Some people will give their dog to a shelter rather than looking for a new home for them. The best way to find one at a shelter is to keep an eye on your local shelter’s website and Facebook page if they have one.

5. Retired Goldendoodles

Some breeders will “retire” their female dogs from breeding after they have had a certain number of litters or the quality of their litters decrease. This is often the case with breeders that own all of their breeding dogs. Once retired they will be spayed and offered for adoption.

Though, you will not find a puppy this way, you may be able to find a middle-aged dog. But this option is becoming less available as breeders embrace Guardian Homes.
