  • Labradoodles with a wavy or curly coat will shed less, but are prone to matting. To prevent matting, you will need to brush and comb their fur every couple of days in addition to the professional grooming.

Professional grooming can be expensive. Large doodles can cost over $100 to be professionally groomed. When you consider they will need to be groomed every one and a half months, the total grooming costs could be as high as $600 to $1,000 annually. That’s on top of food, vet bills, and general pet supplies.

  • Be open to the color, fur type, age and gender, your future rescue may be. Very specific preferences will limit your ability to be matched with a dog.
  • Review the rescue’s requirements. Make sure you meet the requirements before sending in an application. Many rescues have strict requirements for fencing and age limits.
  • Read the adoption policies and make sure you understand the process. Then follow it. Don’t give them a reason to move on to the next applicant.
  • Be prepared. If the rescue requires a personal reference or one from your veterinarian, let the person know that they may receive a call before you fill out the applicant.
  • Complete the application in its entirety. Don’t leave out information.
  • Be patient. Unlike breeders who breed on a schedule, rescue dogs can come in at any time. Sometimes there will be an influx of dogs but, most of the time you will need to wait for one. Also, there may be a line of potential adopters that have already been approved ahead of you.

  • Consider volunteering to be a foster home. This is a great way to get to know the dogs and the rescue. Not to mention you will be helping out the rescue and dogs. But the rescue group may require that you foster a few dogs before you are able to adopt the one you are fostering.

IDOG Rescue is a national rescue organization that is based in Houston, Texas. They have a network of volunteers that rescue and foster Labradoodles, and other doodle types throughout the USA.

Their volunteers have working relationships with local shelters that inform them when a Labradoodle enters a shelter. This allows the group to get the dogs out of a high-kill shelter in Texas and into a home quickly.

Once rescued from a shelter, the dogs are placed in a foster home and evaluated for temperament. They are also health checked by a veterinarian and provided with needed medical care.

They also have a re-homing program that helps people who can no longer care for their doodle find a home for their dog.

Since they list all of their dogs on their Facebook page you will need to look for “TX” after the dog’s name in the Facebook post to find one in Texas.

2. Doodle Rock Rescue

Doodle Rock Rescue (DRR) is a nonprofit rescue located in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area. They specialize in rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing all types of doodles in need.

Their main focus is on helping dogs in the South Texas shelter. This is due to the high euthanasia rates at these shelters. However, they will accept dogs from all over the United States.

In addition to offering rescue services, DRR opened the CHEW Animal Clinic. The goal of this clinic is to provide high quality, affordable veterinarian care.

They serve local shelters, animal rescues groups and qualified families within the Dallas/Fort Worth area. CHEW also provides on-site group training to assist families and rescue partners with mild behavioral concerns.

3. Doodle Dandy Rescue

Doodle Dandy Rescue (DDR) is a nonprofit organization located in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area. While based in Dallas County, they also have satellites in Austin, San Antonio and Houston

They have over 1000 active volunteers that provide rescue and foster services. Volunteers monitors shelter admissions and secure the dog’s release from the shelter, many of which are high kill. They then provide temporary care until the dog can be placed with foster families.

Once in foster care, dogs receive medical assessment, treatment, and grooming as needed as well as behavioral attention as they transition from traumatized to secure.

Doodle Dandy also offers re-homing services for families that need to give up their pets.

4. Doodle Rescue Collective

While the Doodle Rescue Collective’s headquarter is in Warwick, RI, they offer re-homing services for Labradoodles and every other kind of Doodle throughout the US including in Texas.

The collective consists of over 800 registered volunteers throughout the USA and parts of Canada. Volunteers work with local shelters to place doodles in need of a safe home in foster care until a permanent home can be found.

They also run a re-homing program for doodle owners that need help finding a new home for their dog. They accept doodles into this program in most states meaning you may be able to find a doodle in need near you through their website and Facebook page.

5. Retrieve a Friend Texas Sporting Breed Rescue

Texas Sporting Breed Rescue, Inc. (TSBR) is a 501(c) 3State of Texas non-profit organization that specializes in rescuing sporting breeds.

The mission of Texas Sporting Breed Rescue, Inc. (TSBR) is to provide for the welfare, shelter, and adoption of lost, abandoned, neglected, or homeless dogs and puppies, specifically; The American Kennel Club (AKC) 30 defined sporting group breeds – Retrievers, Setters, Pointers, Spaniels, Vizslas, Weimaraners, and Spinone Italianos. While the Labradoodle is not an AKC sporting breed, TSBR does offer services to poodle mixes.

6. Poodle Patch Rescue

Poodle Patch Rescue Inc is a 501 (c) 3 non profit was founded in Texarkana, TX on May 2005. They are an all volunteer, rescue and re-homing group for homeless, unwanted, neglected, or abused animals. Founded primarily for Standard Poodles but take all others when space permits including poodle mix breeds on occasion. Dogs are in cared for in volunteer foster homes. They do not a facility.

Adoption Process

Their allowable adoption area is within 350 miles of Texarkana, TX, which is on the boarder of Texas and Arkansas. Some of their dogs may be in Arkansas.

7. Mini Mutts Animal Rescue

Mini Mutts Animal Rescue specializes in all types of small dogs including the popular mini Labradoodle and other mini doodle types. At the time of this writing they had a few mini doodle type dogs available.

They are located in the Dallas Area. Dogs that come to this rescue are often abandoned on the streets, or left at a shelter. They work to rescue and place these dogs in caring foster homes until they can find their forever homes.

Adoption Process

The adoption process includes an application, two years of vet records, and a home visit. The adopter must be at least 25 years of age and responsible for maintaining a household (no full-time students). You must also provide picture identification (driver’s license preferred) and proof of your current address and have the consent and knowledge of all adults living in the household.
