Are Dogs Allowed in the Mall? Plus 39 Dog-Friendly Malls

Updated 03/13/2024 – Are you a pet parent looking for something to do with your furry friend by your side? As dogs become increasingly seen as members of the family, many of us are on the lookout for dog-friendly venues, including places to shop. But the question remains: Are dogs allowed in the mall?

Are Dogs Allowed in the Mall?

The majority of indoor malls in the United States do not allow dogs (including emotional support animals dogs) with the exception of ADA-Defined Service Animals. However, most “open-air” or outdoor malls do allow leashed pet dogs in their common areas.

Do Any Indoor Malls Allow Pet Dogs?

Yes, we have discovered 12 indoor malls that allow pets. You can find a list of these malls below. We have also compiled a list of 27 outdoor or open-air malls that welcome your four-legged companions.

Not only do some malls allow leashed and well-mannered dogs in their common areas. Some actually encourage dog owners to bring their dogs by offering special features like comfort stations, water fountains designed for dogs, enclosed dog park, social hours, and other canine centered events tailored to them.

Just to be clear, this post is about domestic dogs that are considered to be pets. Guide dogs and service dogs have a different set of rules. To learn more about service animal requirements visit ADA.gov.

Mall Etiquette for Pets and their Owners

Bringing your furry friend to a mall can be a fun experience. However, navigating public spaces like malls with pets requires a thoughtful approach to etiquette to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone involved. Here’s our guide to pet etiquette in malls:

1. Know the Mall’s Pet Policy

Before you head out, it’s essential to check the mall’s pet policy. Some malls are pet-friendly with specific conditions, while others might restrict access to service animals only.

Don’t assume that they are just because you saw someone in the mall with a dog that they are allowed.

Pet policies can vary widely and change overtime, so it’s best to visit the mall’s website or contact customer service for the most accurate, up-to-date information. For your convenience we have included links to the on-line pet policy for most of the malls on our list.

2. Keep Your Pet on a Leash

Always keep your pet on a short leash or in a pet carrier while in the mall. Do not use retractable leashes. This helps you maintain control over your pet and ensures their safety as well as the safety of others.

3. Be Mindful of Others

Not everyone is a pet lover, and some people have allergies or fears. Be respectful by giving other shoppers space and not allowing your pet to approach them without permission.

It’s also crucial to avoid areas where pets might not be welcome, such as the food court or certain stores. You want to make sure it is a pleasant shopping environment for everyone.

4. Manage Pet Behavior

Only take well-behaved dogs that can handle the stimuli of a busy mall environment. Training your pet to respond to commands and behave calmly in crowded spaces or around loud noises is essential for a stress-free visit.

If your pet becomes anxious or exhibits disruptive behavior, it might be best to take them home.

5. Take Care of Pet Needs

Be prepared for your pet’s needs, including water, water bowls, snacks, and bathroom breaks. Some pet-friendly malls offer pet relief areas; locate these in advance.

Always carry waste bags and clean up after your pet immediately to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. Make sure waste is disposed of in the proper trash receptacles.

6. Respect Store Policies

While the mall may be pet-friendly, individual stores may have their own policies. Look for dog-friendly stores that have pet-friendly signs (you can find them at store entrances) or inquire with store staff before entering with your pet.

7. Monitor Your Pet’s Health

Only bring your pet to the mall if they are healthy to prevent the spread of diseases to other pets. Ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/tick preventatives to keep them and others safe.

If at an outdoor mall in hot weather watch for signs your dog is getting too hot. A hot dog will pant heavily and start to slow down.

Also take notice if the shopping center has parking areas with black tops.  The black asphalt in the parking lot could cause burns to your dog’s feet in hot weather.
