17 Large Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

03/25/2024 – When searching for a new furry friend, many people like myself, find themselves limited by their pet allergies. This often leads to the search for hypoallergenic dog breeds, but many of the hypoallergenic breeds tend to be smaller in size. However, not everyone wants a pint-sized companion; some prefer the presence and personality of a larger dog. Recognizing this preference, we’ve compiled a list of 17 large hypoallergenic dog breeds.

So, what does “hypoallergenic” actually mean?

Essentially, hypoallergenic dogs are breeds that are less likely to trigger allergic reactions in humans. These dogs typically have coats that produce fewer allergens or shed less. This means potentially less hair and dander in your home, which are common triggers for allergies. Pet allergies are often triggered by proteins found in a dog’s hair, dander (skin flakes), saliva, and urine.

It’s important to highlight, though, that no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Even breeds labeled as hypoallergenic can still produce allergens, though hopefully in smaller quantities.

Remember, the extent of allergic reactions can vary from person to person, depending on individual sensitivities to these proteins. If allergies are a concern it is best to spend time with the dog before committing to a lifetime with them.
