What is an English Goldendoodle?

An English Goldendoodle, goes by a few different names. It has also been referred to as an English Cream Goldendoodle, English Teddy Bear Goldendoodles or an European Goldendoodle. 

Regardless of the name, the English mini Goldendoodle is a crossbreed between a cream or white mini poodle and an English Golden Retriever. 

The English Golden Retriever also goes by a few different names including the British Golden Retriever, an English Cream Golden Retriever or an European Goldendoodle Retriever. 

The English Golden Retriever vs the American Golden Retriever

As I mentioned earlier, the primary difference between Mini Goldendoodle and the Mini English Goldendoodle is the type of Golden Retriever that is used in breeding. 

The English Goldendoodle is bred using a British Golden Retriever (aka European Golden Retriever), while the Goldendoodles we commonly see in the United States are bred using an American Golden Retriever. 

Golden Retriever Origins

While they may have all started in the same place, the English and American Golden Retrievers developed differently. This is due to the breeding standards used in each country and breeders following what the public wanted. 

Let’s take a look at what is different between the two types of Goldens.

English Golden Retriever

Although they are called an English Golden Retriever, they can also commonly be found in Scandinavia, on the European continent, in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

• Build: English Golden Retrievers are often slightly shorter and stockier than their American counterparts. They have a more muscular build and blocky heads with a broad skull.
• Temperament: They are known for their calm, gentle, and friendly demeanor. English Goldens are typically less active and exuberant compared to their American counterparts, making them excellent family pets.
• Looks: They tend to have a lighter coat color, ranging from cream to light gold. Their fur is typically longer and feathered, giving them a more luxurious appearance.
• Health: English Golden Retrievers often have fewer health issues due to their breed standards that prioritize conformation and longevity.

American Golden Retriever

• Build: American Golden Retrievers are taller and leaner with a more streamlined body. They have a narrower head with a more pronounced stop.
• Temperament: They are typically more energetic, outgoing, and sociable. They have a zest for play and outdoor activities, making them great companions for active families.
• Looks: Their coat colors can vary from light gold to a deeper golden shade. Their fur is shorter and less feathered, giving them a sleeker appearance.
• Health: American Golden Retrievers may have a slightly higher risk of certain health issues.

The differences between these Golden Retriever variations primarily stem from distinct breeding goals. English breeders prioritize conformation and temperament, aiming for a more laid-back family companion. American breeders focus on energy and athleticism, ideal for activities like hunting and dog sports.

Keep in mind that individual temperament and health can still vary within each breed, depending on the breeder’s practices and lines used.

English Cream Mini Goldendoodle

1. Breeding 

The English Cream Mini Golden doodle is bred using a light-colored English Golden Retriever and a white or cream-colored mini poodle. And just like with their American counterparts they come in different doodle generations. 

Goldendoodle Generation Classifications

Goldendoodle generations refer to the specific breeding combinations used to create these dogs. Understanding these generations is important because they can influence the dog’s appearance, size, coat type, and hypoallergenic qualities.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common Goldendoodle generations:

• F1 Mini Goldendoodle: This first-generation cross involves a purebred miniature poodle and a purebred Golden Retriever. The result is a Mini Goldendoodle that’s typically 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever.

• F1 B Mini Goldendoodle: An F1B is created by breeding an F1 Mini Goldendoodle back to a Miniature or Toy Poodle, making it 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. This generation often has a curlier coat and is more likely to be hypoallergenic, which is preferable for those with allergies.

• F2 Mini Goldendoodle: This is a second-generation Mini Goldendoodle, produced by breeding two F1 Mini Goldendoodles together. They retain the 50-50 mix of Poodle and Golden Retriever, but their traits, especially in terms of coat type and shedding, can be more varied.

• F2B Mini Goldendoodle: An F2B is a backcross in which an F2 Mini Goldendoodle is bred back to a Miniature or Toy Poodle. This generation will be 62.5% Poodle and 37.5% Golden Retriever, typically inheriting the Poodle’s hypoallergenic and low-shedding coat.

• F3 or Multigenerational Mini Goldendoodles: These are Mini Goldendoodles bred beyond the second generation. They can be a mix of various combinations like two F2 Mini Goldendoodles, or an F2B bred with an F1B. The breeding at this stage becomes more intricate, resulting in a wider range of traits.

It’s important to understand that the percentages mentioned in the goldendoodle generations above are approximate estimates. In the world of crossbreeding, nature doesn’t follow strict rules, and there are no guarantees about which specific genes will be passed down to the offspring.

2. English Cream Mini Goldendoodle Size

You can find the smaller size English Goldendoodles in mini or petite sizes. The petite size is generally less than 25 pounds, while the larger sized mini can get up to 45 pounds.

3. Mini English Goldendoodle Temperament

Additionally, the Mini English Cream Goldendoodle’s temperament makes them suitable candidates for service dog roles. Their calm and trainable demeanor allows them to excel in assisting individuals with various needs, whether it be as therapy dogs, emotional support animals, or service dogs for those with disabilities. Their natural inclination to form strong bonds with their owners makes them highly attentive and responsive to their human companions.

The downfall of this very social breed is that they don’t like to be alone. Long stretches of alone time may lead to separation anxiety. This could then turn into unwanted behaviors like crying or destructive chewing.

4. English Goldendoodle Trainability

The Mini English Cream is generally known for being an intelligent and trainable breed, which can make training a rewarding experience for both the dog and the owner. However, the ease of training can still vary among individual dogs, depending on their unique temperament.

As long as you are consistent with your commands, train often, and give them tasty treats as an award, your mini Goldendoodle should learn quickly and can be easily potty trained.

5. Is the Mini English Goldendoodle Hypoallergenic? 

For allergy sufferers, the answer to whether Mini English Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic is a bit of a mix – both yes and no. Here’s a closer look at why.

Allergies in people are commonly triggered by proteins found in a dog’s skin cells, saliva, or urine, with dander (tiny flakes of skin) being a key allergen. When dogs shed their hair, they also release dander into the air. This can be problematic for allergy sufferers, as inhaling dander can trigger allergic reactions.

However, Mini English Goldendoodles are often bred to shed less. This reduced shedding means they’re less likely to release significant amounts of dander, potentially making them a more suitable option for those with allergies. To ensure minimal shedding, it’s crucial to find a breeder who conducts thorough genetic testing.

But shedding isn’t the only way allergy sufferers can be exposed to allergens. Contact with a dog through licking, petting, brushing, or cleaning up can also introduce these proteins to allergy sufferers.

But even this is not a guarantee that you will not be allergic once you are living with them full-time.

6. Mini English Goldendoodles Colors

While the most desired color for the English Goldendoodle is cream, it is possible for the Goldendoodle puppies to come in shades of light cream to light golden. You can also find mini English white goldendoodles. 

7. Goldendoodle Coat Types

The English Mini Goldendoodle sports a striking coat, often with wavy to curly fur. This eye-catching feature is a hallmark of the breed’s appeal.

When it comes to maintaining their curly coat, regular grooming is key. You’ll want to brush them a few times a week to prevent tangling and distribute natural oils. Additionally, scheduling a visit to a professional groomer every 6 to 8 weeks is advisable for trimming and shaping their coat to keep it manageable and looking its best.

Baths should be given as needed, typically every 4 to 6 weeks, using dog-specific shampoo. Ear cleaning is crucial to avoid wax buildup, especially with their floppy ears.

8. English Goldendoodle Exercise Requirements

The exercise needs of Mini English Cream Goldendoodles can vary, but as a rule of thumb, they thrive with a moderate amount of physical activity to maintain their health and happiness. Daily walks, typically one or two, offer them mental stimulation and help burn off excess energy.

Engaging in playtime activities like fetch, tug-of-war, or interactive toys adds a fun element to their exercise routine. Outdoor exploration, such as hikes or park outings, appeals to their curious nature. Given their intelligence, mental stimulation through puzzle toys, training sessions, or obedience exercises is as important as physical exercise.

These social dogs thrive on social interaction, making playdates or trips to a dog park beneficial. Plus, many Mini English Cream Goldendoodles naturally love water, so if you have access to a safe swimming area, they might relish swimming as part of their exercise regimen.

Importantly, it’s crucial to tailor their exercise routine to their individual energy levels and preferences. Some may be more active, while others are content with a more relaxed lifestyle. Regular exercise not only keeps them physically fit but also prevents boredom and behavioral issues.

9. Goldendoodle Health

The Mini English Cream Goldendoodle, while generally a healthy breed, may inherit certain health concerns that are common to both the Golden Retriever and Poodle parent breeds. One notable concern is cancer, which has been a prevalent issue among Golden Retrievers in North America. A health report by the Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA) in the late 1990s revealed that cancer was the cause of death in a substantial 61.4 percent of their dogs.

However, it’s worth noting that European-bred Golden Retrievers seem to have a notably lower cancer risk, with a 2010 study reporting a death rate of 38.8 percent due to cancer. While still higher than the average for most breeds, this rate is significantly lower than that found in North American Golden Retrievers.

In addition to cancer, here are some other health conditions that can affect Goldendoodles:

• Sebaceous adenitis – Skin disease
• Hip dysplasia – This is a condition in which the thigh bone becomes displaced from the hip joint. There is a strong genetic component with this condition, which can be avoided through genetic testing
• Sub-valvular Aortic Stenosis – A disease which causes a narrowing at the aortic valve of the heart
• Addison’s disease – Also known as hypoadrenocorticism, this disease decreases hormone production from the outer part or cortex of the adrenal gland
• Various eye diseases – Common eye diseases include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts and glaucoma
• Von Willebrand’s disease – a blood condition that affects clotting
